Tribal face paints in Papua New Guinea Image Gallery

Papua New Guinea is one of the most culturally diverse countries on Earth, with over 850 indigenous languages and at least as many traditional societies, out of a population of just under seven million.

The PNG Constitution expresses the wish for “traditional villages and communities to remain as viable units of Papua New Guinean society”

The word papua is derived from pepuah, a Malay word describing the frizzy Melanesian hair.

Papua New Guinea is one of the most heterogeneous nations in the world. There are hundreds of ethnic groups indigenous to Papua New Guinea, the majority being from the group known as Papuans, whose ancestors arrived in the New Guinea region tens of thousands of years ago. Many remote Papuan tribes still have only marginal contact with the outside world.

The Goroka Show is definitely happening of the year. Thank you very much to Rita Willaert who gave us special permission to use her fantastic images.
